Tanner Valant – maezen

Before we get into your work, can you just tell us a little bit about yourself?

Growing up in Colorado, I was always captivated by nature’s ability to create life and beauty. From a young age, I found peace and inspiration in the world around me, and it naturally led me to explore art as a form of expression. Now, at 19 years old, I’ve decided to pursue my passion full-time. I currently attend the Art Institute of Chicago, where I’m developing my craft and expanding my artistic abilities. Outside of school, I exhibit my work in galleries and through private venues, building my career and following my dream of being a full-time artist.

We are curious about your past and your style. When did you get started with art, what are your preferred topics and how would you describe your style?

My artistic journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when drawing became my escape from the world around me. What started as a simple way to quiet my mind soon grew into a deep passion. Through daily practice, I taught myself and developed a unique style that blends hyperrealism with surrealism, using color pencils as my primary medium. My work reflects both detail and distortion, merging the real with the surreal.

To be part of our project, we asked each artist to address certain topics in their designs that we should all think about more often. Can you briefly explain what your designs are about and what message you want to convey with your designs for maezen.

In my collaboration with Maezen, I’ve drawn on recurring motifs from my personal work, blending themes of nature and life with dark, monochromatic elements. The inclusion of dark reflective hands, figures, and abstract shapes represents humanity, creating a stark contrast with the organic forms. This tension between opposing forces is intentional, yet the overall composition remains balanced and harmonious, symbolizing an ideal world where nature and humanity coexist in peace.

Last question, is there one thing which is important to you that you would like to share with our community?

One thing I’d like to share with the Maezen community is the importance of curiosity. Whether you're an artist, a creator, or working in any field, embracing curiosity can open doors to opportunities and experiences you never imagined. It’s the key to growth, discovery, and finding your own path.
